Kelsey’s Corner:
The Zipper Moment
There’s this moment I have noticed the last couple years around August that knocks the wind out of me.
It’s not the supply lists, the new shoes, or even the first-day photos.
It’s the sound of the backpack zipper. (Yes, of course, little ol' sensory advocate me)
That tiny zipppp as it closes on sharpened pencils, untouched notebooks, and the big promise of another year... it feels like it echoes through my whole house. That’s the moment I realize we’re stepping into something new again. This is all still really new to us... as my oldest starts kindergarten this year.
And if I’m honest? That zipper sound gets me now and probably will every single year.
The Truth Behind the Smiles
Yes, we post the smiling pictures. We pack the perfect lunches (at least on day one). We hug our kids and tell them they’re ready, that they’re brave, that they’re smart. And all of that is true.
But we also cry in the car.
We doubt ourselves.
We replay the summer in our heads and wonder if we did enough.
And here’s the thing, mama (or dad, or grandparent, or guardian), you did. You showed up. You loved them. You created the memories that will outlast the sand in the car and the popsicle stains on the porch.
This Season Isn’t About Perfection
Back-to-school isn’t about getting it all right. It’s about rhythm, not perfection. Some days the shoes won’t match, the papers will go missing, and dinner will be cereal (and it’s fine). Some days will hum smoothly like a well-oiled machine, and you’ll want to bottle that magic.
Both are real. Both are beautiful.
From My Kitchen Table to Yours
So here’s my encouragement to you, from one parent’s messy kitchen table to yours: Take a deep breath. Give yourself credit. Let the zipper moment wash over you, but don’t let it undo you.
You’ve got this.
And when you don’t, your community is here to remind you that you’re not doing it alone.
This is Kelsey’s Corner — where I remind you (and myself) that love and presence will always be louder than the chaos.
