Kelsey’s Corner:Backpacks, Crayons, and Memories That LastThere’s something about the back-to-school season that always brings a mix of emotions. Excitement, nerves, pride, and just a touch of nostalgia all rolled together. Maybe it’s the sight of brightly colored notebooks lined up in the store aisles, or maybe it’s watching our kids sling backpacks over their shoulders that look just a little too big for them. Either way, this time of year makes me pause and remember that childhood really does fly by. This week, I found myself tucking away my boys’ drawings, first-day notes, and even the little scraps of paper with their “practice signatures” on them. They may not look like much now, but I know there will come a day when I pull them out and my heart aches at how small their handwriting once was. These treasures, as tiny as they may seem, are proof of the moments we often take for granted in the hustle of everyday life. It inspired me to start a simple tradition: a school-year memory basket. Every time something comes home that feels worth saving, it gets dropped in the basket. No organizing, no overthinking. At the end of the year, we’ll go through it together, laugh at the silly doodles, celebrate the certificates, and decide what should move into a permanent keepsake box. It’s a small act that makes the chaos of parenting feel a little more meaningful—and gives me comfort knowing I’m capturing their story as it unfolds. If you haven’t tried this before, I encourage you to create your own version—a basket, a folder, a digital album—whatever works for you. Because the truth is, one day those backpacks will be gone, and we’ll want these little reminders of who they were at this moment in time. |
