Back-to-School Memory Box

Every new school year brings home a flood of papers, artwork, and small keepsakes that tug at our hearts. Instead of letting them pile up on the counter or vanish into drawers, try creating a special Back-to-School Memory Box. This simple project is easy enough for kids to help with and creates a keepsake that your family will treasure for years to come.

Start with a shoebox, a small storage bin, or even a decorative box from the craft store. Cover it with wrapping paper or let your child paint and decorate the outside with markers, stickers, or washi tape. Label it with their name and grade, and add a fun detail like their school photo taped to the lid. The beauty of this project is that it’s fully customizable—no two boxes will ever look the same.

Throughout the year, drop in items like artwork, certificates, photos, or even little notes from friends. You don’t need to be selective in the moment—just let it all collect. At the end of the school year, sit down as a family and go through the box together. You’ll laugh at the funny moments, celebrate their growth, and pick the most meaningful items to keep long term. The rest can be photographed or recycled, freeing up space without losing the memories.

Not only is this a fun craft, it’s also a wonderful way to teach kids about valuing their own milestones. They’ll beam with pride when they see their work being saved and celebrated—and you’ll have a tangible reminder of how far they’ve come in just one short year.
