What to Pack for a Full Day OutSensory + Family Edition

Whether it’s a fall festival like the Burg Fest coming up this weekend, a zoo trip, or a marathon day of errands, leaving the house for a “full day out” as a family can feel like preparing for a cross-country trek. If you’ve ever arrived somewhere only to realize you forgot The One Thing that would’ve saved the day...you’re not alone.

Over time, I’ve perfected my go-to packing strategy to keep everyone comfortable, calm, and meltdown-free.

Consider this your family-friendly, sensory-smart checklist.

Comfort & Clothing

  • Layered outfits: Fall weather loves to surprise us. Lightweight hoodies, extra socks, and a spare outfit (always) go a long way.
  • Comfortable shoes: You will walk more than you think...trust me.
  • Blanket or oversized scarf: Doubles as a sensory comfort item, picnic mat, or stroller cover in a pinch.

Snacks & Hydration

  • Pack a mix of protein-rich snacks, crunchy favorites, and one “fun treat” for morale boosts (because sometimes a fruit snack does save the day).
  • Reusable water bottles for everyone, hydrated kids are happier kids.
  • Thermos with warm apple cider or hot chocolate for fall outings = instant cozy vibes.

Sensory Essentials

  • Noise-reducing headphones or earplugs: Crucial for festivals, parades, or crowded spaces.
  • Fidgets or comfort objects: Think sensory dough co. kits, focus pendants, or handheld fidgets to help regulate on the go. (www.facebook.com/sensorydough)
  • Mini sensory bag: A zip pouch with a few sensory dough co. favorites keeps things organized and easy to grab when overstimulation hits.

Practical Must-Haves

  • Wipes (all-purpose, not just baby), tissues, and hand sanitizer.
  • Portable phone charger—because maps, tickets, and contact info all live on your device now.
  • Small first-aid kit: band-aids, ointment, and any daily meds.

Pro Tips from Experience

👉 Keep a fully stocked “go bag” in the car at all times. That way, spontaneous adventures don’t require a 30-minute scramble.
👉 Ziplock bags are your friend—for snacks, wet clothes, or containing inevitable “mystery messes.”
👉 Overpack comfort, underpack clutter. The right few items can make or break the day.
