Community Hero Spotlight:

WILS

Empowering Independence.

Strengthening Community.

Changing Lives.

Warrensburg disability support, Center for Independent Living Missouri, WILS Warrensburg, accessible transportation Missouri, peer support MissouAs snow gently settled across our neighborhoods this week and schools closed for winter’s first big moment, it felt like the perfect time to slow down and shine a warm, grateful spotlight on an organization that embodies what true community support looks like: WILS – West-Central Independent Living Solutions.

Located right here at 612 N. Ridgeview Dr., Warrensburg, WILS is more than a center, more than a service, and more than a resource. It is a lifeline. A community-builder. A place where belonging is intentional and independence is celebrated. And this season, we are proud to honor them as a Premium Sponsor of our Big Steps, Little Hero Campaign.

Where It All Began: A Spark of Hope in 1996

The story of WILS starts with a simple but powerful question: “What if independence didn’t depend on limitations… but on community?”

In 1996, that question lit a spark in rural Missouri — a spark that grew into a movement. Imagine living in a small town where everyday life feels out of reach because the world around you wasn’t built with you in mind. You want to attend events, volunteer, make choices, see friends, and participate fully in your community… but barriers stand in the way.

Then you meet a team who looks you in the eye and says:

“We believe you can — and we’ll walk beside you every step of the way.”

That was the beginning of WILS. Not paperwork. Not bureaucracy. A person-to-person promise that independence isn’t just possible — it’s your right.

What Makes WILS Different?

Many organizations talk about understanding the people they serve. At WILS, this understanding is lived every single day. More than 51% of their staff and board members are people with disabilities, meaning every decision, program, and service is shaped by firsthand experience.

“We are who we serve.”

It isn’t a slogan. It’s their identity — and it’s what makes WILS one of the most trusted Centers for Independent Living in Missouri.

The Heart of Their Mission

WILS believes every person deserves the choice, control, and support needed to live life on their own terms. Independence is not a luxury reserved for some — it is a human right. And WILS strives to remove the physical, emotional, and societal barriers that make independence harder to access.

Two Services Families Love Most

Peer Support Paint Group: Creativity meets community in this uplifting space where laughter, self-expression, and connection flourish. Led by peers with lived experience, these sessions foster confidence and belonging.

WILS Accessible Transportation: A cornerstone of independence in rural Missouri. From doctor appointments and shopping to community outings, this service reconnects people to their daily lives with dignity and warmth.

A Few Fun Things You Might Not Know

Many are surprised to learn just how many people they already know are connected to WILS — neighbors, church members, volunteers, drivers, advocates, or participants in their programs. WILS is woven into the fabric of our towns in ways most people never realize.

And if WILS had a theme song? “Lean on Me.” Because independence doesn’t mean doing everything alone — it means having the support you need, when you need it.

WILS Wants You to Come Visit

Whether you join their Peer Support Paint Group or take a ride with their transportation team, WILS would love to welcome you. These are the experiences that best reveal what independent living truly looks like in action: joy, connection, accessibility, and genuine community.

How WILS Supports Our Community

WILS is continually giving back — sponsoring events, donating supplies, partnering with local organizations, and leading initiatives like their Community Care “Give” Buckets, filled with essential items for neighbors in need.

One important thing every family should know: You do not need a visible disability or a blue disabled parking tag to receive help from WILS. Invisible disabilities, chronic conditions, temporary challenges, mental health needs — all are valid, and all are supported with dignity.

Their Favorite Local Spot

WILS adores the Sedalia Farmers’ Market — a vibrant, inclusive place that welcomes everyone and reinforces the community spirit WILS believes in.

One Word That Defines WILS: Empowering.

Thank you WILS for all that you do for our community.
