The “Worth It” Filter for Family Plans

By Kelsey Beaver, Macaroni KID Publisher –Clinton, Warrensburg, Sedalia & Whiteman Air Force Base February 23, 2026

Here’s what I’ve learned the hard way: an event can be amazing and still not be right for your family this week. So instead of forcing it, I use a simple filter... and it saves us so much stress.

Before you say yes, ask:

1) What’s the “true cost”?
Time, money, energy, the meltdown potential, the aftercare. Not just the event time — the whole thing.
2) Is this a “do it” week or a “keep it simple” week?
Your family’s capacity matters. Some weeks are meant for big fun. Some weeks are meant for survival.
3) What’s the exit plan?
If you can leave easily, you’ll feel braver trying new things.
4) Does at least one person truly want to go?
Not “we should.” Not guilt. Genuine interest counts.
5) Will this help us connect?
Sometimes connection looks like laughter. Sometimes it looks like everyone being calmer afterward.
6) If we skip it, will we regret it?
If the answer is no… that’s your sign.

Use these questions as permission to choose what fits. You don’t need a packed calendar to be a good parent. You just need a plan that works for your people.

We’re always happy to help families find what works for them.
