Next time you're walking around the Warrensburg courthouse square with your kids, try this:
Ask them if they can find the dog.
Tucked near the courthouse is a bronze statue of a dog named Old Drum, and he’s actually part of one of the most famous stories in American history.
Back in 1870, a local court case about a farmer’s dog led to a speech that included the phrase “man’s best friend.”
That phrase spread across the country — and it all started right here in Warrensburg.
For kids, the statue becomes a little downtown adventure.
Can they find Old Drum? Can they touch his nose? Can they take a picture with him?
Suddenly a simple walk around the square becomes something memorable.
And sometimes that’s all family adventures really need to be.
