During the city council meeting, the City of Warrensburg officially proclaimed April 2026 as Autism Awareness Month, publicly recognizing the importance of continued understanding, support, and inclusion for autistic individuals and their families throughout our community.

Presented with the support of local advocates and community members committed to autism awareness and inclusion efforts in the area, the proclamation served as both a formal acknowledgment and a visible reminder that autism is not a private conversation happening only behind therapy doors, classroom walls, or within individual households.

Local advocates in attendance emphasized the importance of continued progress toward broader understanding and support for the autism community.

One advocate in attendance shared that the evening represented

“an encouraging step toward continued visibility for autism in our community.”

It is part of our community....

and the families navigating it deserve to be seen.

For many in attendance, the evening represented more than a ceremonial reading.

It represented visibility.

It represented progress.

It represented the continued momentum of families, educators, therapists, advocates, and organizations working every day to create a more informed, compassionate, and inclusive community for neurodivergent individuals.

And while many continue encouraging the broader conversation to evolve from awareness toward deeper acceptance, accessibility, and inclusion, moments like this remain meaningful milestones in that journey.

For parents raising autistic children, for autistic adults advocating for understanding, and for families whose daily lives include navigating sensory needs, accommodations, therapies, stigma, and systems not always built with them in mind—public recognition matters.

It tells families:
We see you.

It tells children:
You belong here.

It tells the broader community:
This matters. Learn more. Do better. Be better.

No proclamation alone changes the world.

But moments like this create space.

Space for conversation.
Space for learning.
Space for understanding.
Space for future progress.

And often, that is where meaningful change begins.
