Kelsey’s Corner: The First Week of Summer Always Feels Like Freedom

By Kelsey Beaver, Macaroni KID Publisher –Clinton, Warrensburg, Sedalia & Whiteman Air Force Base May 27, 2026

There’s something about the first official week of summer break that feels different from every other part of the year.

The schedules disappear almost overnight.

Lunchboxes vanish.

Nobody remembers what day it is anymore.

And suddenly your house sounds like kids running in and out every five minutes asking for snacks.

Honestly?

I kind of love it.

Not because summer is always easy—it absolutely isn’t.

But because there’s a freedom to it that feels nostalgic in the best way.

Summer has a way of slowing life down just enough for the little moments to matter again.

Neighborhood walks.

Late sunsets.

Quick trips downtown.

Farmers market mornings.

Kids playing outside until they’re filthy and exhausted.

And maybe this sounds dramatic—but I honestly think small-town summers hit differently.

There’s just something special about seeing communities come alive this time of year.

Splash pads full.

Local events packed.

Families actually outside together again after a long school year of rushing everywhere.

And every year around this time I find myself thinking the same thing:

These are the moments childhood is made of.

Not perfection.

Not expensive trips.

Just simple summer days that somehow become core memories later.
