I Can't Wait for School to Start.
I'm Also Going to Miss This.
Back-to-school looks a little different in our house this year.
One is heading into first grade.
The other is heading back to daycare.
And thankfully, they both genuinely love their "schools," which means our first mornings usually aren't filled with tears or anyone clinging to my leg at the door.
Actually, it's almost the opposite.
They're excited.
I'm excited.
We're usually completely dressed, packed and ready approximately an hour before we need to leave...
And then we just sort of stare at each other.
"So... now what?"
Naturally, somewhere during that first week, we'll probably find ourselves at Yummy's Donut Palace a few times.
For good measure, obviously.
Here's the Part I Feel Slightly Guilty Admitting
I'm ready.
This summer has been hard.
I've spent most of it trying to balance multiple businesses while still having at least one child home with me.
And if you've ever attempted to answer emails, run a business, meet deadlines or form one complete thought while simultaneously being asked for a snack, help finding a toy, another snack, and something that is apparently an emergency but definitely is not...
You understand.
So yes.
I am looking forward to sitting down to work in a quiet room.
I'm looking forward to finishing a thought while it's still the same thought I started with.
I'm looking forward to getting through a workday without somebody yelling "MOM!" from another room.
There. I said it.
I am ready for school to start.
And I'm going to miss the heck out of this.
Because Somehow, Summer Happened Anyway
We didn't take some huge summer vacation.
We didn't travel all over the place.
And there are plenty of things still sitting unchecked on the summer bucket list I apparently thought we'd have endless time to finish back in May.
But we did something else.
We stayed close to home.
We supported local businesses.
We showed up for small businesses every chance we got.
We found things to do right here in our own communities.
And we spent a lot of very ordinary days together.
At the time, those days didn't always feel particularly memorable.
Some of them felt long.
Some felt chaotic.
Some involved way too much screen time.
Some ended with me wondering how I managed to be busy for twelve straight hours while somehow accomplishing absolutely nothing on my list.
But now that we're standing at the end of it...
I'm realizing those days were the summer.
And Then Comes the Mom Guilt
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't carrying some of it into another school year.
We didn't finish the bucket list.
I worked too much some days.
There were adventures we talked about that never happened.
And it's incredibly easy to look backward and think:
"I should have done more."
But here's the funny thing.
If one of my friends told me exactly what I just told you, I know what I'd say to her.
I'd tell her to give herself all the grace in the world.
I'd tell her that her kids were loved.
That they played.
That they were safe.
That they got to spend time with her.
That a summer doesn't become meaningful because every box on a list has a checkmark beside it.
I'd probably tell her that her kids aren't sitting around conducting an end-of-summer performance review.
And then I'd tell her to quit being so hard on herself.
So maybe I should talk to myself like I'd talk to my friend.
Maybe You Should, Too
If you're heading into this school year thinking you should have done more this summer, this is me telling you what I'd tell you if we were sitting across from each other over coffee:
Give yourself some grace.
Actually, give yourself a lot of it.
You didn't have to give them the summer you pictured in May.
You gave them their summer.
The ordinary one.
The messy one.
The one where life still had to happen.
And someday, I have a feeling those ordinary pieces will be the parts we miss most.
So I'll take the first-day pictures.
We'll probably be ready an hour too early.
We'll make our completely necessary donut stops.
I'll come home to a strangely quiet house.
And then I'll sit down and finally get some uninterrupted work done.
I'll love it.
I'll miss them.
And apparently...
that's motherhood, too.
Kelsey's Corner is where I share the funny, messy, meaningful and usually slightly chaotic parts of raising kids and building a life right here in our community.
