We survived the first week of school!
Whether your family needs carnival rides, Friday night lights, a slow Saturday morning or one last swim-under-the-stars kind of night, there's plenty happening close to home this weekend.
๐ก Holden Annual Street Fair
Thursday–Saturday • Aug. 27–29
Holden, Missouri
FREE
The Missouri State Fair may be over, but we're apparently not done with fair food and carnival rides just yet.
Holden's annual three-day Street Fair is back with rides, games, food, vendors, live entertainment, contests, a parade and family activities.
This year's theme is “250 Years: True to the Red, White, & Blue,” celebrating America's 250th birthday with plenty of small-town pride.
Why I'm Picking It: After a week of alarm clocks and school routines, this feels like exactly the kind of weekend where we deserve funnel cake. ๐
๐ Friday Night Lights
Warrensburg High School vs. Smith-Cotton
Friday, Aug. 28 • 7 PM
Warrensburg
Football season is officially here! Warrensburg hosts Smith-Cotton Friday night for a little hometown football under the lights.
General admission is listed at $6 for ages 6+, while children ages 5 and younger do not need a ticket. Reserved seating is listed at $7.
Why We Love It: Few things say “school is officially back” quite like the first Friday night football game.
๐ Slow Saturday Morning
Warrensburg Farmers' Market
Saturday, Aug. 29 • 8 AM–Noon
Johnson County Courthouse Square
If the first school week wore everybody out, here's your slower option.
Grab a coffee and wander the square while shopping fresh produce, handmade goods and local finds from area vendors.
The market runs Saturday morning around the historic Johnson County Courthouse Square at 300 N. Holden Street.
Kelsey's Tip: Give the kids a few dollars and let them choose something from a local vendor. Shopping small becomes a lot more fun when they're part of it.
๐ Worth the Short Drive
Dragons & Fantastic Beasts
Powell Gardens • Kingsville
Wednesday–Saturday
Life-size dragons and fantastic creatures are waiting throughout Powell Gardens in an outdoor adventure designed for families and young explorers.
Kids can explore, play, follow clues and complete quests while making their way through the gardens.
Current event listings show daytime admission at $10.
Best For: The kid who would choose dragons over football without even thinking about it. ๐
๐ฌ Dive-In Movie: Elemental
Saturday, Aug. 29 • 7:30–10 PM
Warrensburg
Now this feels like the right way to close out the first school week.
Warrensburg Parks & Recreation has Elemental scheduled for its Saturday night Dive-In Movie.
Why It Made the List: Swimsuits + movie night + kids who will hopefully sleep incredibly well afterward. Everybody wins.
โค๏ธ However You Spend It...
You don't need to fill every minute.
Pick one adventure. Stay home for the rest. Visit a local business. Let everybody sleep in.
We found our way through Week One.
I'd say that deserves a little celebrating.
