The Childhood They're Actually Living ❤️

I think most of us have a picture in our heads of the childhood we want to give our kids.

The traditions. The adventures. The holidays. The family pictures where everybody is looking at the camera and nobody is crying.

That last one might be asking a little much. 😂

We plan the outings, buy the tickets, pack the snacks and try so hard to make it all special.

And while we're busy creating the childhood we imagined, our kids are living a completely different one.

The one where a puddle is worth stopping for. Where a cardboard box is a spaceship. Where the same joke is hilarious for the forty-seventh time.

Where the best part of a carefully planned outing might be the elevator.

And maybe that's not a distraction from childhood.

Maybe that IS childhood.

Some of the moments that seem ordinary to us are enormous to them.

Being allowed to help make dinner. Staying up a few extra minutes. Finding something fascinating on the sidewalk. Having our full attention while they explain something that makes absolutely no sense to us.

We don't need to stop planning beautiful experiences. Those matter, too.

But maybe we can stop measuring childhood by how much we manage to fit into it.

Because childhood isn't a collection of completed activities.

It's a thousand tiny moments of discovering the world and figuring out where you belong in it.

And sometimes our biggest job is simply to notice the childhood that's already happening right in front of us. ❤️
