PARENTING • HALLOWEEN HUMOR
Let's talk about one of the greatest parenting betrayals of all time.
Your child finds the PERFECT Halloween costume.
They absolutely love it. They beg for it. They talk about it for weeks. They practically sleep with the package.
You buy it.
You feel accomplished.
You may even be brave enough to coordinate the entire family's costumes around it.
And then Halloween arrives.
"I don't want to wear that."
EXCUSE ME?! 😂
The same costume you told me was the most important thing in your entire life approximately eleven business days ago?
That costume?
And suddenly you're negotiating with a tiny person who has the confidence of a courtroom attorney and absolutely no financial responsibility.
Welcome to parenting on Halloween.
Here's the thing, though.
Sometimes children change their minds because, well, they're children.
Other times, the costume that looked incredible in a picture feels completely different once it's actually on their body.
The fabric is scratchy. The mask is hot. The sleeves feel weird. The shoes aren't comfortable. Or the whole thing is suddenly just too much.
And while we're thinking about the money we spent, they're thinking about how uncomfortable they feel.
Both feelings can exist. But the costume doesn't have to win.
Maybe they wear the costume for five minutes.
Maybe they wear their favorite pajamas with a Halloween bucket.
Maybe the dinosaur costume becomes a dinosaur T-shirt.
Or maybe they decide to be something entirely different using whatever happens to be in the laundry basket.
Honestly, that's a pretty impressive level of creativity.
If you're still hoping for that adorable Halloween picture, try taking one during a costume practice run before the big day.
Let them move around in it. Sit down. Walk. Play. Find out whether that costume is actually wearable for more than thirty seconds.
And have a backup outfit ready, just in case.
Because at the end of the night, nobody is handing out parenting awards for keeping a pirate hat on a screaming toddler.
The memory matters more than the matching costume.
And someday, you might look back at that Halloween photo of your child dressed as absolutely nothing you planned and laugh harder than you ever would have at the perfect picture.
So here's to the superheroes who became dinosaurs, the princesses who wore sneakers, and the children who decided their regular clothes were perfectly acceptable Halloween attire.
May your candy buckets be full and your costume negotiations be short. 😂❤️
